The Story
FireRed and LeafGreen retell the original Kanto adventure with full-color Game Boy Advance presentation: choose your starter from Professor Oak, earn eight badges, and complete the Pokédex while your rival needles you at every turn.
Team Rocket's scheme plays out as veterans remember — Mt. Moon, the S.S. Anne, the Celadon Game Corner, and the siege of Silph Co. — but with rebalanced teams, updated moves, and quality-of-life touches the 1998 originals lacked.
The big addition is the Sevii Islands, an archipelago south of Kanto. The first three islands open mid-adventure after Cinnabar Gym; the remaining four unlock after the League, hiding a Rocket warehouse, rare Pokémon, and the key to the National Dex.
Beyond the familiar beats, these remakes tie into Ruby and Sapphire with trading, new move tutors, and post-game content that makes Kanto feel larger than it ever was.
Good to Know
- Until you earn the National Dex post-game, Pokémon can't evolve into non-Kanto species — plan your team around the original 151.
- Sail to One, Two, and Three Islands as soon as they open after Blaine; the side quests there reward you well before the League.
- The Vs. Seeker lets you rematch trainers — use it to grind money and levels without wild encounters.
- Teach HMs to expendable team members; unlike TMs, HMs still can't be forgotten without the Move Deleter on Two Island.
- Your starter choice decides which legendary beast roams Kanto post-game: Bulbasaur → Entei, Charmander → Suicune, Squirtle → Raikou.
- Hold off on using the Master Ball until Cerulean Cave — the roaming beast is much easier to catch with it than Mewtwo is without.
After the Credits
- Explore Sevii Islands Four through Seven: new dungeons, the Team Rocket Warehouse, and wild Johto and Hoenn species.
- Rematch the Elite Four with far stronger teams, and hunt the roaming legendary beast across Kanto's routes.
- Catch Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave and complete the National Dex — all 386 entries this time.
- Link up and trade with Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to finish version-exclusive entries.
