The Story

You fall through a rift in the sky into Hisui — the ancient Sinnoh of centuries past — where humans fear Pokémon and the very idea of a Pokédex doesn't exist yet. Recruited into the Galaxy Expedition Team's Survey Corps, your mission is simple in concept and enormous in practice: research every Pokémon in the region and complete the first Pokédex, earning your rank star by star.

Hisui is fractured by a growing space-time rift, and its frenzied noble Pokémon — the great lords and ladies tended by the Diamond and Pearl clans — are lashing out. With the help of the clan wardens, you track down each noble, soothe it with balms crafted from its favorite foods, and battle it when words fail. Each quelling earns you a new rideable Pokémon and opens a new region to survey.

The story's back half pivots from exploration to mythology: the rift's origin, the Red Chain, the clash between Dialga and Palkia, and the identity of the one who has been manipulating events all along. The finale at the Temple of Sinnoh is one of the hardest — and most dramatic — boss gauntlets in the series.

And then there's the true ending: Arceus itself, the 'Original One,' waits beyond a completed Pokédex. Catching them all isn't postgame filler here — it's the point of the entire game.

Good to Know

  • Crouch in tall grass and throw Poké Balls at unsuspecting Pokémon from behind — back strikes massively boost catch rates and this is the core loop.
  • Don't neglect Research Tasks: each species' Pokédex page levels up through specific tasks, and higher Survey Corps rank gates story progress.
  • Alpha Pokémon (the big red-eyed ones) are high-level and aggressive, but catching one early gives you a powerhouse — just save first.
  • Crafting is essential: keep stocked on Poké Balls, potions, and revives, and gather materials as you explore instead of backtracking.
  • Noble battles are two-phase: dodge their attacks and throw balms during openings, then send out your Pokémon when they're stunned.
  • Use distraction items (berries, cakes) to turn aggressive Pokémon away before throwing a ball; Hisui's wilds punish recklessness.

After the Credits

  • Complete the Pokédex (all 242) to unlock the encounter with Arceus itself — the true final boss of the game.
  • Massive mass outbreaks: timed swarms of Pokémon across every region, the best shiny-hunting method in the game.
  • Path of Solitude: solo battles against tough opponents with a single Pokémon, testing your battle fundamentals.
  • Hunt the 107 wisps and 28 Unown scattered across Hisui to encounter Spiritomb and complete your collection.
