The Story
You've just moved to the tropical Alola region, where there are no gyms — instead, young trainers take on the island challenge: a series of trials set by island captains, each ending in a battle against a powered-up Totem Pokémon, capped by a grand trial against each island's kahuna.
Early on you befriend Lillie, a mysterious girl protecting a strange cloud-like creature she calls Nebby. As you travel, the goofy Team Skull keeps getting in your way — but the real threat is the Aether Foundation, the seemingly benevolent organization researching the Ultra Beasts pouring through wormholes in the sky.
Aether's president Lusamine has her own obsession with the Ultra Beasts, and when she drags Nebby into Ultra Space, you'll have to follow her through the wormhole to bring Lillie and Nebby home — with the fate of Alola's light hanging in the balance.
With Alola saved, one last challenge awaits: the newly built Pokémon League on Mount Lanakila, where you can become the first Champion Alola has ever known.
Good to Know
- There are no HMs — Ride Pokémon (Tauros, Lapras, Charizard Glide, and more) handle all field obstacles automatically as you unlock them.
- You get the Exp. Share as a key item very early — keep it turned on so your whole party levels together.
- Totem battles are 2-on-1 fights where the Totem calls an ally. A fast Pokémon with Taunt, or spread/status moves, trivializes most of them.
- Use Pokémon Refresh (petting, feeding, grooming) after battles — high affection gives bonus EXP, extra critical hits, and lets Pokémon survive would-be knockouts.
- Wild Pokémon can call for help (SOS battles). Chaining them is the best way to find hidden abilities, high-IV Pokémon, and even shinies.
- Z-Crystals come from trials and totems — match the crystal to one of your Pokémon's types and save the Z-Move for the Totem or kahuna's ace.
After the Credits
- Battle Tree: the post-game battle facility where you team up with (and face) familiar faces like Red, Blue, Cynthia, and Wally.
- Ultra Beast missions: join Looker and Anabel to track down the remaining Ultra Beasts across Alola.
- Zygarde cell hunt: collect all 100 cells scattered across the islands to assemble Zygarde's Complete Forme.
- Title defense: rematch the Elite Four with stronger teams and defend your Champion title against challengers.
